Gnu
"Gnu is a comfortable upholstered chair with a robust wooden structure and a unique modern silhouette. It owes its luxury character to consistently developed details and featured combinations of materials, which made it possible to achieve a unique effect in such a popular category of furniture. However, as in the majority of designs, it is the details that determine the final shape and beauty of the product. Embarking on our work on the Gnu chair, we sought to create an item of furniture that would become synonymous with contemporary luxury and to equip it with features that would make it stand out against the background of the abundant market offer. We wanted Gnu to become a showcase of craftsmanship mastery, which we seek to cultivate alongside our collaborating studios and manufacturers. Our intention was to create a chair that would refer to the old school of designing furniture that lasts for generations, durable, solid, easy to preserve – furniture whose longevity and individual traits acquire a symbolic value, accompanying our everyday lives. Genesis and inspirations
Yet, such a bold and ambitious approach entails a risk and uncertainty. As for Gnu, we combined and launched in production the technologies that initially seemed very difficult to combine, but subsequent attempts were not getting us closer to a successful end. Eventually, regular production of this piece could begin owing to modern-day tools for precise wood machining and processing, foam moulding, and our determination. Tomek Rygalik’s talent and our efforts were also appreciated by the curators of the Polish design collection at the National Museum in Warsaw, where Gnu became part of the permanent design display at the Museum’s main edifice. This comes as a symbolic crowning achievement of our hard work on this advanced design, which stands out among other artefacts in the Museum collection. The soft seat and the characteristic rounded shape of the backrest offer exceptional comfort and excellent support for the back and arms. The sophisticated technology of connecting upholstered elements with the wooden structure is what makes Gnu an innovative and distinctive piece of furniture that sits perfectly in contemporary interiors. Owing to precisely matched elements, the exquisite wooden finishes emphasise Gnu’s air of luxury.
The moulded backrest guarantees a fixed shape and durability even when intensively used. The durable and resistant structure is made of solid veneered beech wood.
A wide colour range of natural veneers offers the possibility to easily compose this chair, which emanates a sense of lightness, with the corresponding collection of Xylo tables. Depending on the choice of colours and upholstery, Gnu can perfectly function both in domestic spaces and in prestigious public interiors.
