Calder

In 2018, Comforty launched collaboration with Janek Kochański, one of the most talented designers of the young generation. Winner of the Wallpaper Design Award 2014, Kochański made a distinctive furniture design debut that corresponded with his doctoral project at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. 

It was there, at his studio, that Janek conducted his original work on tools and ways of measuring the ergonomics of furniture at the prototype stage. That was how this armchair came into being, which borrows from the tradition of Modernism and the Bauhaus to offer refined comfort, achieved by Janek with research tools of his own invention; an armchair that casts a somewhat ironic look at the collection of elaborately soft furniture. 

As opposed to most of Comforty’s products, Calder XL manifests the DNA of our brand through its ergonomic qualities, rather than the volume of upholstered surfaces that offer comfort.  

This fresh and youthful approach to the portfolio of our brand after nearly two decades of its successful history symbolically opens up a new chapter for Comforty. This product expands our perspective on the chief value of our upholstered furniture: comfort. Always lying at the heart of our design development, comfort is present here in a revisited and reversed form that originates from most recent research achievements in ergonomic design. 

The concept of the shape and the finishing details, enabled by multi-plane plywood forming technology, ensures a soft and cosy experience of the backrest. Slightly overscaled, it guarantees comfort in more and less formal sitting positions even for tall people. The robust and curved backrest offers a sense of safety and protection.  

The form of the armchair is sensually experienced through its soft organic shapes that appear to hover above the ground. Noble materials are also used, such as solid oak wood, turned in three sizes, used in the carefully sculpted armrests that emanate warmth. A table of solid oak or walnut wood is available in one of the versions. Relative to the proportion of the upholstered components, the steel structure appears almost neutral, unless highlighted with a vivid colour. 

Despite its clear nod to ascetic Modernist design, Calder will not remain unnoticed in any interior. Depending on selected fabrics and colours, its scale and sophisticated details may stand out more prominently in hotel and office lounges. Accents of the base may be optionally made of noble metals: brass or steel. 

Individual versions differ in appearance and function, which makes Calder a versatile armchair for both home and office spaces. 

In 2019, one year after the first prototype was shown, we added further variants to the Calder collection. The armchair can be complemented by a bench, which preserves all its comfort parameters, but whose vast plywood backrest evokes romantic orangery furniture, made in the old days of wicker and rattan. The bench perfectly expands the armchair function by offering comfortable support for two people. 

Calder XL is available in several upholstery versions: leather or fabric. With armrests soft and upholstered, or made of solid oak wood, or else with no armrests at all. The armchair can also come with a useful writing top made of solid oak wood, available to order for right-handed and left-handed users. Colour of the powder-coated, curved, tubular steel frame can be chosen from the RAL palette and Comforty’s sand structure lacquer collection, rust, copper and pearl brass.
