Czesław
"This product was designed specifically for the Polish Presidency in the EU, responding to the needs of spaces arranged for bilateral meetings and unofficial behind-the-scenes talks in the seat of the Council of the European Union in Brussels. Czesław is an individualist who also excels as a team player. All the traditional elements of an armchair, such as the seat, backrest, legs and armrests are integrated here as a uniform compact form. The balanced look and scale render the Czesław furniture family exceptionally versatile. The item works perfectly as a group in public and office spaces, while also functioning ideally as a distinctive piece in a domestic interior. "

Genesis and inspirations
Czesław’s style is derived in a certain measure from the earlier Chopin sofa model. It expands its idea of a robust solid with characteristic elements of Tomek Rygalik’s collection for Comforty: distinctive curves and powerfully emphasised surfaces when viewed from the front, sides and backrests generously filled with foam, and the distinctive profile of the silhouette. Akin to the Chopin sofa, the upholstery fabric tightly clings to foam, highlighting the more formal and solid appeal of this design. The full backrest and high, solid armrests offer perfect support for arms wide open, encouraging a posture open to communication and interaction with the interlocutor. For the needs of use in public spaces, but without resigning from a solid base, the bottom part of Czesław is tilted to the back in order to protect it from being soiled by footwear. This details adds lightness to the silhouette, rendering its geometry more interesting and dynamic. Another asset is the extra loose cushion on the seat, which can be separately dry cleaned. This solution is ideal for public spaces. The bottom part of the cushion is covered with non-slip fabric, which always holds it in the right position. Aside from the fabric, this item of furniture can be customised by choosing one of the countless colours of thread used in the decorative upholstery hemstitch.
Given its compact, tightly-adhering upholstery, Czesław looks best in wool fabrics, which are ideal for this type of sculptural, compact forms. Moreover, these fabrics are made of natural materials, which means they can be recycled. Designing the visual identification for the Polish Presidency in the EU Council – the first presidency of a country from the former Eastern Bloc – Tomek Rygalik sought to address the tradition of cotton artisanal products typical of southern Poland.
