Genesis and inspirations

Following the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which stands for the affirmation of imperfection, Ume’s structure and look explore the perception of the shape of furniture and engages with asymmetry, without losing any comfort and ergonomic qualities. The irregular line of the silhouette deconstructs the typical geometry of the solid, emphasising its structural and technological virtuosity. The bold combination of surfaces set at different angles with roundings and curves generates a surprising result in the form a design with a soft appeal and a highly ergonomic, curved seat, which stands in contrast to the geometry of the solid. The merely double fabric overlay on the backrest demonstrates a very honest approach to upholstery, seeking to eliminate connections and stitches. This simple procedure, inspired by Oriental clothing, lends the refined form warmth and gentleness. The direction of the fabric is also very important as it highlights the simplicity of the approach to upholstery and to fabric itself. The seemingly asymmetrical shape of the design fosters the illusion of elusiveness and ambiguity.  The masterful layout of the fabric turns it into an integral part of the form, whose character is thus ultimately defined. Edges and details emphasised by the designer as well as the prominent softness and gentleness of curves are intuitively recognised. To see what is inside, one needs to follow the rhythm of the form and overcome the illusion of distorted reality. The Ume series includes an armchair and a two-person sofa, with optionally added wheels. A memory return swivel armchair is also available. The characteristic detail in the form of a welt meandering irregularly around the piece can be optionally made of a contrasting fabric. Ume can become the centrepiece of the interior or discreetly blend into its colour palette. However, regardless of the colour, its original silhouette will never go unnoticed.

The work on Ume was a fascinating confrontation with imagination and the technological potential that can reflect it at a given moment. Many details evolved during the stage of sewing and laying upholstery layers when limitations of various upholstery fabrics were encountered. Our refusal to employ conventional fabric cutting brought about further challenges related to the manner of laying the fabric and the course of the stitches during the work on the ergonomics of the seat and the backrest. Our immense effort and ambition to create a design we had never seen before were acclaimed by experts.

In 2021, Ume was purchased to the design collection of the National Museum in Warsaw
