"The Mark sofa perfectly conveys contemporary designers’ fascination with Modernism of the 1950s and 1960s as well as details characteristic of Scandinavian furniture from that period. Directly referring to iconic designs by Danish masters, such as Finn Juhl and Hans J. Wegner, Mark’s designers, Espen Voll and Torbjørn Anderssen, reveal personal fascination with design from that era.   "

Genesis and inspirations

Mark is a contemporary authorial vision, and the solutions and details used evoke valuable qualities of Scandinavian design. The beauty of natural wood, prominently featured in the sofa’s silhouette, is combined with the contrasting softness of cushions placed on the wooden structure. The composition is harmonious and clearly defined. It seduces with its simplicity and sincerity of the design gesture based on the truth of the material and the function.

The loose cushions of the backrest may be freely placed on the seat, depending on the number of users and desired depth. Owing to its relatively low backrest, the sofa does not dominate the interior and allows for showcasing its beauty on a par with art and other decoration elements. The piece maintains harmony with architecture and the context. Not devoid of refined details, it nevertheless remains discreet and distinguished. The backrest can also be used for sitting, which makes Mark perfect for placing in the centre of an open space.

Mark is the Oslo duo’s response to the design competition motto: “future classics”. Anderssen & Voll’s participation in the contest organised by Comforty in 2009 and production of the sofa initiated in our collection a distinctive tendency of addressing the recent past and furniture, familiar from our experience, of the modern era, also known as mid-century modern. It was then that the popularisation of good, lasting and economic solutions ushered industrial design into our homes for good in the form of industrially-manufactured, well-designed, durable products of everyday use. The longing for quality, nobility of materials and simplicity of well-considered solutions is manifest in the unwavering popularity of those designs. Many of them stood the test of time and perfectly serves the next generations as items of furniture from the era or modern-day replicas, timeless icons.
